2006 Fundraising Letter

December, 2006
Dear Friends of the Foundation,
Greetings! The responsibility for writing this December 2006
fundraising letter for the Robert Schalkenbach Foundation (RSF)
is one I relish as an ardent believer both in our cause and in
the power of our foundation to further it. Mindful of the value
of my readers' time, I am, however, "[r]educing to its most compact form" the
approach and the accomplishments of RSF in Calendar Year 2006.
In brief, we have been working to develop Georgist ideas from ever
broader perspectives and to make certain they are communicated
beyond our inner circle. The hows and the wherefores now follow
in the description of three projects.
The Youth of Today (loosely defined as everyone at least a decade
younger than I am) are apparently more intelligent but clearly
less literate than the rest of us. They receive and process information
in different ways. RSF's response has been twofold. First, we have
funded Bob Drake's modernization and condensation of Progress
and Poverty. And, second, we have moved, massively, into a new medium
of communication investing in probably RSF's biggest project ever,
a film and DVD with the working title, "Progress
vs. Poverty."
Drake's book releases Henry George's big ideas from the prose
whose 19t' Century elegance (that we love) has become (for others)
21't Century obfuscation. It will also be easier to translate into
other languages, and a Spanish edition is already in the works.
As you can see from the enclosed brochure, we have ramped up our
promotional efforts; we hope you will help us continue them. Exposed
to the ethics and economics of Henry George by RSF board members
past and present, awardwinning motion picture director Philippe
Diaz has contracted with us to produce and distribute a documentary
about the causes of poverty in today's world. Please visit www.cinemalibrestudio.com to see just how fortunate we are to collaborate with him and his
company, Cinema Libre Studio.
RSF is also working more closely with
likeminded organizations to broaden our audience by broadening
our vision. The problem of social justice attracts hearts as well
as minds. The implications of the Georgist perspective can and
should be approached not just with the tools of economics but with
those of the other social sciences and the humanities as well.
We accordingly increased financial and professional support for
a joint conference involving RSF, the Council of Georgist Organizations
(CGO) and the University of Scranton (Pennsylvania), to be held
in Scranton on July 22-26, 2007. We hope you will attend. The last
half of the conference will feature a dialogue between Georgist
and Catholic scholars on topics ranging from the philosophical
(natural law, human nature, the nature of work) to the concrete
(war, immigration, urban revitalization). The University of Scranton
Press has expressed interest in publishing the papers and related
commentary.
Of course, our most important audience remains you,
our supporters. As the enclosed reply form indicates, this year
we welcome not only your financial support but also your time.
I am confident you will be generous with both. I have never (no,
not even "hardly
ever") met a Georgist with a heart less than two sizes too
big and a brain to match!
Sincerely yours,
Adele Wick
RSF President
